SAM MARTIN
OVERLOADED MAN
PROJECT SPACE
24 AUGUST – 18 SEPTEMBER
PREVIEW TUESDAY 24TH AUGUST, 6-8PM
Drawing from a J.G. Ballard short story, Sam Martin’s Overloaded Man is
censored by those who encircle him. His bright yet amorphous characters are
rendered as almost indistinguishable in his expressive mise-en-scene.
Amidst the chaos on the canvas Sam’s subjects provoke an examination
of conscience as dystopian fiction, charting our potential alienation from reality.
Sourcing his imagery from the Internet, newspapers and his own photographic archives,
Sam’s paintings hinge on the relationship between an overcrowded urban landscape
and the excess of cerebral pollutants that define our movements within our chosen living spaces.
Sam’s compositions narrate the dreary, repetitive motion of everyday tasks, becoming
colourful noise and bleeding life out of the characters.
Overloaded Man is Sam’s debut exhibition at Arc One Gallery. He was the
recipient of the 2009 Arc One Gallery/Monash Award for High Achievement.
